Project: Not in service

Not much that looks old is kept around in Norway. Look at architecture, urban planning, cars, logos and infrastructure to name a few examples. We have a relentless insistence on renewal in this country. It’s almost like there’s a fear of not being modern on all fronts. Nowhere is that more apparent than in our nation’s capital.

This is not to say that modernization is a bad thing. Public spaces are being brought out of disrepair and again made usable. New opportunities open up to the public yearly. This is a good thing. Making public transportation universally accessible likewise. The oldest tram car model still in use in Oslo dates back to 1979 — the SL79. It is like a time capsule with many qualities, but accessibility is not one of them. For that reason it must go. By the end of 2024 there will be none left, but before that I wanted to indulge myself in a nostalgic celebration of this icon of Oslo.
